Facts

Budget

The movie will have a budget of approximately one hundred million – this is a rough estimate but it gives us the info that this movie will be a blockbuster (hopefully of epic proportions).
“Recent Internet rumors suggest that the Evangelion movie shall have the budget equal to that of a blockbuster, being roughly of 100 million or more. To compare this with other top movies; The Matrix had a $63 million budget and LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring had a budget of $109 million. It is unknown where such cash is coming from as the income of Anime does not rival that of Hollywood blockbusters.”

Storyline

The movie will focus on the first few episodes of the series. From the production images it can be gathered that the movie is set to feature “Ramiel” the cube with the wonderful drilling device – an episode that showed us the beauty of japanese power and big guns – something ripe for special effects.

Special Effects
The effects will be worked upon by the masters behind Lord of the Rings, Weta Workshop.
“”We are very excited to be a part of this wonderful project,” Weta boss Richard Taylor said. “The subject matter is providing a fantastic level of diversity for us, allowing us to work in the anime world – which is at the other end of the design spectrum from Middle-earth. Having had the privilege of working on such strong source material that The Lord of the Rings offered, it is a privilege to again be involved in subject matter that has a strong and loyal fan base.”

Director

Hideaki Anno will not be directing and Peter Jackson looks tied up also. Much speculation has been spent as to who will direct and rumor has “three A list directors” inline, but nothing concrete and no name dropping as yet.

Release Date

Looking like 2010+

Executive Producer

Husband of voice actress for Asuka – Tiffany Grant, Matthew Greenfield

Name Changes and Consistency

This comes up again and again, and has been adressed partially in the rumors section but I will mention it here also. Concept art with the names “Ray” and “Kate Rose” appeared and there was outroar. In all liklihood these will NOT be the names of the characters in the films, WETA’s site describes the concept art with the correct names and Richard Taylor announced in a podcast his dedication to preserving the integrity of and remaining faithful to the original anime. For more details see the rumors page. However it is doubtful that it will be exactly the same… what would be the point in creating a mere replica? Many aspects will be altered simply to present the story in another medium without making it look “out of place” or plain wrong.

Cast

At such an early stage no actors have as yet been cast. The age and ethnicity of the actors is thusly also unknown, though it is likely the cast will not be entirely Japanese or entirely American.

O Rly? June 9th, 2008

I saw a trailer for this movie on youtube, and i saw emma watson (hermione from the harry potter movies), and she looked to be playing asuka (because her hair wasn’t blue for the part of rei), if so, i can definitely dig it

Ayumi July 20th, 2008

i hope that emma watson will not be playing Asuka…she does NOT fit the part of her at all. No American should be playing any roles at all. That is just wrong. And this is coming from an American. >:[

Alan July 22nd, 2008

That video was a fan video, and it’s a fake one.
Emma Watson won’t play Asuka.

Shawn July 29th, 2008

I saw what was supposed to be the real movie trailer on youtube.com and I must say that I loved it. If the date for the movie is 2010 why is the trailer already out? Most movies put their trailers out to the world when the movie is close to being put in the movies…or on DVD/Blu-Ray. I kinda find it funny that there is no real movie site for the film, you’d think that by now there would be or at least a teaser site.

Richard August 10th, 2008

Yeah, if you’ve seen a trailer then it’s a fake. They haven’t even decided on cast for it yet.

false trailer August 20th, 2008

In regards to what O Rly? said, the Trailer he viewed was only a fan made trailer, there a plenty of them on Youtube, although, Asuka would be a part Emma would be interested since in a n interview she stated that she is an otaku, and Neon Genesis Evangelion was in her top ten animes, in a later interview she said that she would prefer to play a character with an attitude, rather than the same type as Hermione. NOTE: These interviews were no in regards the Neon Genesis Evangelion movie, they were just comments that were made, I don’t see ADV casting Emma as Asuka though, although having a big mainstream actor might just boost profit, since Anime don’t usually draw in such a large box office profit, then again Neon Genesis Evangelion, could pass as a sci-fi movie, with some people not even knowing it was an anime. But like I said, I’m not aware of any casting have been done, and the trailer on youtube was a fan-made trailer.

I would just like to say that ALL characters from anime can be played by AMERICANS. Because, in an anime the characters usually portray japanese people but they are animated to not look specifically like any race. You may not believe me but all you have to do is look at the characters. You could find an american, asian, european, or any other person on the globe who could play an anime role. And correct me if Im wrong, but isnt Asuka a german who can pilot an eva? So why not have Emma play her, she is european.

Dimadro September 24th, 2008

There are only a few actors I can imagine who MIGHT fit the role of certain characters. Don’t think they will use them (all) it si all-star which is pretty expensive.

Captain Misato Katuragi = Jennifer Connelly (A beautiful mind as Alicia Nash)
Doctor Ritsuko Akagi = Carrie-Ann Moss (Matrix as Trinity)
Heroji Kaji = Brad Pitt (Oceans 1… as Mickey)
Commander Gendo Ikari = Kiefer Sutherland (24 as Agent Jack Bauer)
Commander Fuyutsuki = Ian McKellen (X-men as Magneto)
Lorenz Keel = Jack Nickelson (A few good men as Colonel Nathan R Jessep)

Eventhough some of you might not even give it a second look but considering their acting style, voice and (some of them) looks, they fit the role pretty well.

Anyways I thought it might be fun too largly speculate just this time.

Mira October 12th, 2008

I could soo see Kiefer Sutherland as Shinjis father due to the fact that 24 is one of my favorite shows as well as evangelion.
But I doubt that’ll happen. I am looking forward telling my friends “So I bet ya’ liked the Evanglion movie, I told you anime is awesome.”

Procircuitscrub October 15th, 2008

So….I really think that emma would make a good asuka…but Ian Mckellen would make a perfect Fuyutsuki. My god it’s uncanny how much he looks like him in the fan trailer on youtube. (I still get chills when I watch that.) Not to mention the fact that he has worked with WETA in the form of LOTR. I see a high likely hood that he will be in the movie.

mmmm October 15th, 2008

dont make de movie, dont kill evangelion

hollywood = sucks

Mig November 13th, 2008

I’d totally make a great Asuka. >_>
Zher gutt!!

DeF!+LeR=M3 November 22nd, 2008

In all honesty I just hope they don’t mess this movie up. In total I have watched the series 5 times, and would hate for the live action to be messed up by people who only lknow the story line. So if any of them read this, good luck, it won’t be easy to re-create such mastery

SomeRandomDude January 4th, 2009

The stuff we are seeing on youtube are prabably Weta’s beta animations. There is no way Weta would make something that poor. Lord of the Rings was good, and EVA just might be Freaking Awsome.

Jack would be a good canidate, but Agent Smith (forgot his name) from The Matrix would also be good. And I hope they don’t screw this up, `cause alot of Japanese would be pissed.

ZED January 13th, 2009

when they were first talking about making a live action movie there were rumors that robin williams would play gendo ikari…

dark day March 4th, 2009

never ever hire a british actor to play in a movie that is based on a anime. so no no no emma.

asininewhelp April 13th, 2009

Never hire a british person to play in a movie based on a anime!?
Why not, if I may ask?

Since you are talking primarily about Asuka

Asuka is 3/4 Caucasion, and has a rather caucasion appearance. To be frank she would be the EASIEST one to cast without upsetting fans who want the race of the characters to remain as they are.

Basically, I don’t see why a british/european person couldn’t play Asuka, since she is pretty much european herself.

As for Emma watson…I think she would’ve been GREAT actually (She has the looks, and I have no doubt she could play a ‘bitchy’ character). Even Anno saw her as the Ideal choice for Asuka (See, even Anno, the creator of the series, liked the Idea of Emma as Asuka). Though she is 18 now and is wrapped up in the Harry potter films to boot. So she is definately out, regardless of how anyone feels.

Now, as for the other characters…I don’t think they will be as easy to cast as Asuka…Considering the whole great race debate.

Ian June 6th, 2009

Hugo Weaving from Matrix/V for vendetta would be great as shinji’s father, probably why they used him for the fan made trailer

Ello June 7th, 2009

This probably seems like a ridiculous question but does anyone know where/who to contact to audition for the movie?

Page-kun June 7th, 2009

Are you kidding me? The cast is likely picked out already, one would think, so auditions aren’t a good chance. Also, the only character I’m very concerned about having a fitting actor would be Kaji, as we was my absolute favorite in the series.

Death-Mist June 23rd, 2009

Ehh your all forgetting one very important aspect…

All the people playing the role of the EVA pilots have to be young.. as in 15 or younger.. As all the pilots in the series are 14 years old.

I couldn’t imagine Shinji with a beard…

A hopeful fan July 24th, 2009

I hate to cast a dark shadow on this but i dont think their will realisticaly be a movie for atleast 5 years there arnt any facts yet about this movie the only strand of hope that we have which is a confirmed fact, is that the makers of neon genesis want to make a movie and who knows with the recent release of blood the last vampire perhaps and transformers perhaps it may start some kind of trend with anime to live action movies we can only X (<=cross lol) our fingers
